Against this backdrop, the Federal Government has just announced its appointment of Tony Chappel as the Chair and Chief Executive Officer for the CER, bringing extensive regulatory, climate policy and energy market experience to the agency at a pivotal point in Australia’s energy transition.
Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen put out a statement explaining that Chappel was taking on the role at a critical time in Australia’s energy transition.
“Mr Chappel’s appointment comes at a pivotal time, with the Clean Energy Regulator’s work central to Australia’s energy transformation and progress towards net zero,” Bowen said.
Chappel also brings direct energy market experience, having previously served as Executive General Manager of Corporate Affairs, Legal, Risk and Governance at the Australian Energy Market Operator, where he supported national energy market reform and system planning.
“The CER plays a critical role in delivering Australia’s clean energy transition, and Mr Chappel’s expertise and leadership will help ensure it continues to deliver Australia’s key climate and renewable energy programs with integrity,” Bowen said.
