The Trump administration has spent more than $2.2 billion buying four immigration detention facilities from CoreCivic. The purchases expand federal ownership of ICE detention infrastructure as the administration ramps up deportations. The deal follows DHS’s $1.5 billion acquisition last month of the California City Detention Facility and the Otay Mesa Detention Center. DHS said the move protects ICE’s detention network in a state where officials have targeted private detention facilities. A DHS spokesman said California’s “sanctuary politicians” have tried to make private detention facilities financially unworkable.
