The Christian County Board of Education voted 3-1 Thursday night to publish proposed property tax rates for the 2026-27 fiscal year, taking the first step in a new process required under a recently passed state law.
During the discussion, outgoing Board Chairman Tom Bell pointed out that Christian County continues to have one of the state’s lowest school property tax rates.
She said many property owners have seen higher tax bills in recent years because of increased property assessments instead of higher tax rates.
School Board Attorney Jack Lackey said school finance differs from city and county governments because increases in local property tax revenue actually reduce state SEEK funding.
He said it was not a 4% tax increase, but was a 4% revenue increase.
