U.S. health authorities have expanded their investigation into a multistate cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce from central Mexico, adding six states to the investigation and bringing the total number of affected states to 15, according to Reuters. The newly added states are Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa, Nebraska, New Hampshire, and North Carolina. The FDA and CDC initially linked the outbreak to iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell chain restaurants in five states before identifying Taylor Farms in central Mexico as the source of the lettuce. Health officials said they are continuing to investigate whether additional sources beyond iceberg lettuce contributed to the outbreak, as U.S. cyclosporiasis cases have reached record levels this year. Separately, Mexico’s Health Ministry said it is investigating the tourist destination of Quintana Roo after British health authorities identified cyclosporiasis cases in travelers who had stayed there.
