The eclipse will be visible on Wednesday, August 12, with around 91 to 92 per cent of the Sun expected to be covered in Greater Manchester, making it the most significant solar eclipse seen from the UK since 1999. The Moon will begin moving across the Sun at around 6.13pm in Bolton, with the eclipse reaching its maximum shortly after 7.10pm before ending just after 8pm. Kyla Black, director of optical practice at Boots Opticians, said: "Even when most of the Sun is covered, it is never safe to look directly at it with the naked eye during a partial solar eclipse. This increases the risk of eye damage because the eye's natural aversion to looking at the Sun is reduced. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the UK is not expected until 2090.
