According to China’s National Energy Administration (NEA), the country’s combined supply capacity for green hydrogen, green ammonia, and green methanol represented more than 50% of global installed capacity at the end of 2025. Green hydrogen production capacity reached approximately 250,000 metric tons per year, also accounting for more than half of worldwide production capacity. Unlike some international hydrogen strategies that emphasize export opportunities, China’s approach increasingly focuses on developing domestic demand across sectors where direct electrification remains difficult. Such partnerships could support future production of green hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives including ammonia and methanol for domestic consumption and international markets. Although equipment prices have declined as Chinese manufacturing capacity has expanded, renewable hydrogen production continues to compete against lower cost fossil based hydrogen across many industrial applications.
