Many hate crimes perpetrators try to take ‘off-ramp' to avoid trial, LA's top prosecutor says

As Los Angeles sees fewer hate crime cases in 2026, the county's top prosecutor on Thursday touted his office's effort to prevent hate crime suspects from opting for a mental health diversion program to avoid a trial.
It was one of Taylor's three assaults that happened within the span of an hour, the DA's office said.
The DA's office said Cara Marie Agursa spray-painted offensive graffiti on school grounds and threw eggs at the campus.
He said every hate crime allegation is pursued by LAPD detectives who work closely with the DA's office.
When someone commits a hate crime, they are not just violating an individual, they're attacking an entire community,'' McDonnell said.
