Lucio Vasquez / Houston Public MediaCommissioners on Thursday denied Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo’s second attempt at a proposed tax-rate increase to fund early childcare programs.
Like last year, the proposal would have taken the tax-rate increase proposal to the voters of Harris County, which includes Houston.
“I’m so sorry for what we are telling the people of Harris County, that we don’t trust them,” Hidalgo said Thursday.
The upcoming year’s tax rate could exceed 62 cents, and may go up to 68 cents if the county hospital district accepts the voter approval tax rate, he said.
Commissioner Adrian Garcia said polling in his precinct shows residents care about affordability and wouldn’t support the tax rate increase for childcare programs.
