The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Government of Malawi have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation on employment, skills development, and social protection following an official visit by ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo. The discussions highlighted Malawi’s active role within the ILO and the progress achieved through joint initiatives focused on skills development, expanding social protection, and implementing the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions. Both sides also identified youth employment and support for Malawian returnees from South Africa as important areas for future cooperation to strengthen livelihoods and workforce participation. Government officials acknowledged the ILO’s longstanding contribution to labour policy development, skills enhancement, and the extension of social protection, particularly for workers in the informal economy. They also emphasized the importance of continued collaboration in implementing labour policies aligned with international labour standards while addressing key national challenges such as child labour and workforce development.
