According to the agency’s latest analysis, climate-related shocks driven by El Niño could push at least 49 million additional people into acute food insecurity, highlighting the urgent need for early action and increased humanitarian support. WFP warns that without timely intervention, these conditions could rapidly deepen humanitarian needs and threaten livelihoods. The analysis examined 45 food-insecure countries where El Niño is expected to significantly affect rainfall patterns, temperatures, and the frequency of floods and droughts. WFP estimates that the number of people experiencing acute food insecurity across these countries could rise from approximately 225 million to 274 million by the end of 2027. WFP and FAO have called for increased international support to help vulnerable countries strengthen preparedness before conditions worsen.
