The Emerging Africa and Asia Infrastructure Fund (EAAIF) has committed $82.8 million to expand telecommunications infrastructure in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and support one of Africa’s largest fibre-optic network operators.
An additional $32.8 million will go to Eastcastle Infrastructure Ltd. to expand its telecommunications tower network in the DRC.
The expansion is expected to address major digital infrastructure gaps in the DRC, where mobile internet penetration remains low at about 17% and telecom tower availability is significantly below levels recorded in more developed markets.
Currently, one telecommunications tower in the DRC serves between 15,000 and 20,000 people, highlighting the need for increased investment in digital infrastructure.
EAAIF said it is targeting more than $1 billion in infrastructure investments by 2028, having completed multiple financing transactions across Africa and other emerging markets.
