‘Cockroach Janta Party’ (‘janta’ is an alternative spelling of ‘janata’) means ‘Cockroach People’s Party’ (‘Bharatiya Janata Party’ means ‘Indian People’s Party’). On June 6, the movement held its first protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar site (an 18th-century astronomical observatory), demanding that Pradhan resign over the leak of an important medical exam paper the previous month. On June 20, a CJP-led sit-in began at Jantar Mantar. On July 20, when demonstrators attempted to march from Jantar Mantar to parliament, the police — which had refused permission for such action — cracked down hard, injuring numerous people with batons and tear gas. The sit-in therefore ended, although some protesters remained at Jantar Mantar for a while to celebrate.
