Canadian singer-songwriter explores his musical roots with a collection of songs written by othersBruce Cockburn / image by: Daniel KeeblerBruce Cockburn has spent more than 50 years writing some of Canada’s most celebrated songs.
His latest album, The Blood of Others, turns the focus away from his own compositions and towards the music that influenced him long before he began writing.
The album’s title comes from Simone de Beauvoir’s novel The Blood of Others, reflecting themes of personal responsibility and difficult choices.
For Cockburn, it also captures the idea of recording songs that are part of his own musical history, even though he did not write them.
The album closes with three standards: “One for My Baby”, “Les Feuilles Mortes” (“Autumn Leaves”) and “Peace in the Valley”, completing a journey through the sounds and artists that shaped his musical identity.
