After years of discussion, Allegheny County Jail administrators next week will implement a new family notification policy for incarcerated people who experience a medical emergency. The new policy, distributed to Jail Oversight Board members on Wednesday, requires the jail’s onsite medical provider to follow a chain of command that allows a notification to be made to the person’s emergency contact. The notification, the policy said, is to be made “promptly” in the event of an incarcerated person’s death, or a serious illness or serious injury that requires hospitalization. Creating a new policy has been a priority of the board since March and led to sometimes contentious discussions. According to the policy, once the emergency contact is notified, the jail will also provide their contact information to the hospital.
