The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction has joined forces with the Federal Aviation Administration to craft regulations aimed at combating drone-delivered contraband into state prisons. Leslie Dismukes, secretary of the department, warned this crisis extends far past state lines. "Drones are the next frontier of prison contraband and prison violence, and we have got to be able to handle that," said Dismukes to WECT. Congress labeled North Carolina prisons as no-fly zones under the Safer Skies Act, but FAA restrictions tie the hands of officers who spot drones breaching prison airspace. "There is always going to be a new front for people trying to introduce contraband into our prisons, so it's our obligation to make sure we can address those attempts and make sure the contraband doesn't get into the prisons," Dismukes added.
