First Minister John Swinney will “give consideration” to improving bail legislation to help protect women from violent men following the murder of Fife mum Stacy Mair.
The murder has put new bail legislation, that came fully into force last May, back under the microscope.
“I think it’s important that I respect those boundaries and the right of the judiciary to take these decisions in relation to bail,” said Mr Swinney.
There are fears the prison population could reach as high as 9,100 by March next year.
“We have acute challenges in the prison population and we’ve got to make some very careful judgements,” said the first minister.
