A market town has been engulfed by violence and disorder on two nights this week after angry residents stormed houses rumoured to be used by asylum seekers.
One local claimed the landlord had told them to expect new tenants but didn't mention they would be asylum seekers.
'Now they're going to put another 2,000-3,000 asylum seekers on our doorstep.
'That's why we are working with local authorities and others to make the system fairer by housing asylum seekers in basic accommodation, including ex-military sites.
'The population of asylum seekers in hotels has fallen by 35 per cent in the last year and by 63 per cent from the peak of 56,000 in 2023.
