CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — The City of Canandaigua has closed Kershaw Beach after city officials say harmful algae blooms (HABs) were found in the water. As of Friday, the city says Kershaw Beach will remain closed through Monday. Officials say the conditions for harmful algae blooms, also known as blue-green algae, can change very quickly depending on wind direction and water movement. The Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association is a group of mostly volunteer scientists who monitor the lake for HABs. While they don’t directly monitor Kershaw Beach, they’ve detected HABs for 9 of the last 14 days of their monitoring.
