SmartTag – a traceable solution developed by DeterTech UK – can be fired from a handheld canister over distances of up to 10 metres, coating riders, clothing, and vehicles with an invisible marker. Cheshire Police says that the technology provides ‘valuable evidential opportunities’ to link offenders to incidents. “In 2025, we became the first force in the UK to equip officers with DNA tagging spray at all League Two football matches. “While we continue to equip our officers with the spray at football matches, the technology is proving incredibly beneficial in tackling anti-social behaviour involving e-bikes and e-scooters. “Although we would always prefer not to use the spray, officers can deploy it when necessary to tag offenders with a uniquely coded, invisible DNA marker.
