All around Crystal Palace Park, the icon of Tom Jones looms large; grinning lustily from ironic t-shirts, or even cardboard cut-outs raised high in the crowd. But on the stage, Tom Jones the man – of flesh and white hair – is here to somewhat complicate things. But tonight Jones is a lion in Winter, delivering a remarkable, surprising and riskily single-minded show that is heavy with themes of ageing and mortality. Without fanfare, Jones – in dark denim shirt – steps towards a stool, where he sits to sing ‘I’m Growing Old’. While men half Jones’ age yawn by the on-site coffee tent, here is an 86 year old singer painting his self-portait in new and abstract modes.
