Phil Hill: Reflections on the recent protests in Taunton
[]
Somerset County Gazette | News
That was the message you’d have taken away from both sides of a protest in Taunton on a Saturday a couple of weeks ago.
We don’t want you in our country if you’re an ‘illegal immigrant’, shout members of a neo-fascist group.
We don’t want you in our town if you’re spouting such jingoism, counter a team composed mainly of local politicians.
As the law of this land stands, we all have a right to free speech and protest, with certain important provisos, one of which is that racism is a crime.
That means that they have a right to march through Taunton - so long as what they say or do is legal.
