Why are Cheap Trick almost bigger than The Beatles in Japan? When Rockford, Illinois’ Cheap Trick formed in earnest in 1973, they began as most bands do, humbly performing in warehouses, bowling alleys and other midwestern venues willing to host them. The United States fandoms may have been slow to recognise Cheap Trick’s efforts, but they did gain a loyal following elsewhere: Japan. The first was Bob Dylan, and Cheap Trick followed in his footsteps. For Cheap Trick to find their success in a live album, rather than a traditional studio recording, was serendipitous, in its own way.
