£5.46M East Midlands rail upgrades to begin this month as digital signalling testing follows

Digital signallingFurther testing is being carried out over the August bank holiday weekend ahead of digital signalling being introduced on the East Coast Main Line.
Engineering work associated with the East Coast Digital Programme will affect journeys south of Peterborough towards London between 8pm on Saturday 29 August and 8am on Monday 31 August.
Loading…The work forms the final stages of testing ahead of the £1.4bn East Coast Digital Programme’s introduction of digital in-cab signalling, replacing traditional lineside signals with real-time information sent directly into drivers’ cabs.
Digital signalling was introduced on the Northern City Line in London in 2025 and will be used on the East Coast Main Line between Welwyn and Hitchin this summer.
Network Rail head of access integration for the East Coast Digital Programme Ricky Barsby said: “The work taking place involves the final preparations for us to begin a gradual introduction of digital in-cab signalling on the East Coast Main Line.
