Democratic congressional nominee Will Lawrence said Wednesday that he allowed his Democratic Socialists of America membership to lapse within the past month, days after winning Michigan's 7th District primary. Lawrence's primary win over two more moderate rivals had already fueled debate within the party over its leftward direction heading into the general election. The Republican campaign arm has cast Lawrence's primary win as a liability for Democrats. National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Mike Marinella said the result "leaves them with a radical socialist nominee, an emptier bank account" heading into the fall. He now heads into a competitive general election against Barrett, with control of the US House among the stakes riding on the race.
