Inverclyde Council leader responds to calls to pause data centre developments

Slate Island Developments unveiled proposals earlier this year for a data centre and battery energy storage system at the former IBM site at Spango Valley in Greenock.
MSP Ross Greer (Image: PA)Mr Greer said: “A lot of people in Inverclyde are really concerned about the impact that hyperscale data centres like the one proposed at Spango Valley could have on their bills, their community and our environment.
“It is time to pause hyperscale data centre applications until councils have clear guidance and Scotland has a coherent national strategy.
There are currently 24 hyperscale data centres proposed for sites across the country, including the Spango Valley plans.
Mr Greer says councils are being asked to make decisions on these planning applications without clear guidance from the Scottish Government.
