Days later, however, it was found severely weakened, suffering from acute diarrhea and barely able to move. Researchers chose not to recover the carcass, saying decomposition had already begun and that entering the area would have unnecessarily disturbed the wolf pack. One of the young wolves, with which the puppy had played almost daily, approached and attempted to initiate play, apparently unaware that the weakened animal could no longer respond. Of the six wolf cubs born to the pack this year, only one is known to have survived. Researchers also revealed that the same wolf pack had taken in another stray puppy earlier this year, although that animal did not survive the winter.
