Nigerian security forces have rescued 308 people abducted in separate attacks in the northern states of Niger and Kwara, with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu describing it as the largest same-day rescue operation ever carried out by the country’s joint security forces, according to a presidential statement cited by Reuters. Around 163 of those rescued had been kidnapped from the Woro community in Kwara State’s Kaiama district. The Woro victims had been held captive since February after armed attackers raided their community, killing at least 170 people in one of Nigeria’s deadliest attacks by armed gangs this year. According to the presidency, all 308 hostages were rescued during a joint operation in the Kainji Lake National Park involving the Nigerian Armed Forces, intelligence services, and police. Earlier this week, Tinubu approved salary increases of up to 80% for members of the armed forces.
