In August 2006, the family festival on Christchurch Quay brought the community together as the town changed around it. Huge crowds packed the quay for the final two days of the town regatta, bringing generations together. By 2016, the regatta was held on a separate weekend because boats gathering for the fireworks had made it impossible for the carnival and regatta to run simultaneously.
