Dive Brief:The Senate on Wednesday confirmed Erica Schwartz, an experienced public health official and supporter of vaccines, to lead the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention almost a year after the controversial firing of the last permanent director. “Erica Schwartz has a tough road ahead,” the American Public Health Association said. The American Public Health Association and others say Schwartz has the background to serve as an effective CDC chief. She then served as a U.S. Public Health Service officer and deputy surgeon general during the first Trump administration. During her confirmation hearing, Schwartz promised that she would “never betray the science” as head of the CDC.
