An SNP and a Tory politician are urging new Defence Secretary Wes Streeting to let military aircraft help in the fight against wildfires. Graham Leadbitter and Tim Eagle, acting separately, have both asked for new firefighting capabilities to be added to UK aircraft. Tim Eagle MSP (inset top) and Graham Leadbitter MP. Mr Eagle added that fire control planes have also been employed for decades in the United States and demonstrate how military transport aircraft can provide effective support. Both politicians stressed that the government must learn from this incident in order to prevent future wildfires from destroying more land.
