Local authorities say that a person is impersonating a county deputy and trying to scam people out of money.
According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, residents are reporting that someone claiming to be with the sheriff’s department is taking advantage of people who have bonds to pay.
The callers claim to be with the sheriff’s department and are directing people to a fake site via QR code, supposedly to facilitate the process of paying the bond.
The sheriff’s department stresses that deputies will never call you trying to get you to pay a bond.
All bonds are paid by cash, not through a QR Code that leads to an outside site.
