From Monday, August 10, work will start on the B1099 Upwell Road in March, where a section near the junction with the B1098 (Sixteen Foot Bank) will be used to test pioneering engineering solutions in real‑world conditions.
Around 40% of Cambridgeshire is underlain by peat soil – including 97% of Fenland and large parts of East Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire – making highway maintenance particularly difficult.
Work like this is set to take place along Upwell Road in March starting next week, with a full road closure in place throughout.
An experiment to find better ways to fix peat soil roads is set to begin in Fenland on Monday.
