The Metropolitan Police has been issued with an enforcement notice and reprimand by the Information Commissioner’s Office to significantly improve its data protection training, monitoring and governance arrangements. The data watchdog found “multiple weaknesses” and ordered the Met Police to make data protection improvements to reduce the risk of unlawful disclosure of personal information. “In these cases, the Metropolitan Police Service failed to put in place the safeguards needed to protect people’s personal information. The ICO found that the police officer who sent the email in the second incident – and their line manager – had not completed data protection training for over four years before the incident. However, the data protection regulator found that further action was still needed at the Met Police.
