Fife Council is preparing to launch a new five‑year Gaelic Language Plan and has been asking people across the Kingdom to help shape it through an online consultation, which closes on Friday, August 7.
The draft, covering 2026 to 2031, describes the language as “woven into Fife’s history, landscape and place‑names, reflecting a rich heritage that continues to be reclaimed and strengthened”.
It adds that “since 2011, the number of users in Fife has doubled, with around 1.3% of the population now reporting some language ability”.
The plan is being drawn up “in line with the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005 and Scottish Languages Act 2025”, and is aligned to national and local equality priorities.
The consultation on Fife’s Gaelic Language Plan 2026–2031 is open to anyone, whether they already use the language, are learning it or are simply interested in Fife’s cultural heritage.
