Mary L. Girardat Stone, age 82, a former resident of Edinboro, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2025, at Passavant Community, Zelienople, Pennsylvania. She was born Dec. 13, 1942, in Mead-ville, daughter of Glenn M. Girardat and Anna B. McCurdy Girardat. Mary graduated from Ohio University, 1964, with a B.A. degree with high honors, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and achieved an M.Ed. degree, Edinboro University, 1979. Her initial 20-year career was in social work. In 1984, she resigned from Crawford County Children & Youth Services, helped her husband survive a cancer episode, returned to college for an A.S. computer science degree, Edinboro University, 1986, and then enjoyed a second career as a computer programmer at Edinboro University. Her many volunteer activities included Victim Support Network and Women's Services Inc. Board of Directors in Crawford County, Edinboro Highland Festivals, Edinboro Regional Community Services and Edinboro Food Pantry. She particularly enjoyed volunteering at Women's Services abuse-awareness programs for elementary school children. Her husband, Alfred W. Stone, Ph.D., died Aug. 14, 2007; stepson, Clifford A. Stone, died May 5, 1998; sister, Ruth Girardat, died April 5, 2017; daughter-in-law, Cynthia Stone, died July 17, 2022. Survivors include son, Scott A. Stone and his wife, Rose, and their children, Annaliese, Christopher and Tiernan; stepson, David W. Stone; stepson, John A. Stone and his wife, Brenda; stepdaughter, Bonalyn S. Stone and her children, Joel B. Stone and Sarena Overton-Ware; the beloved families of her brother, Harold Girardat, and her sisters, Alice Swavey, Norma Starcheski, Marsha Kilburn, Barbara Ridgeway, Gail Dolan and Kathryn Hart; aunt, Sara Vernier; and dear friends, Kay and Jim Engel, and Dan and MaryEllen Stickle.
