According to News24, the fire broke out on 30 July and claimed the life of Lauren's 92-year-old father, Sam Strime, a long-time Sea Point resident who remained active at local schools well into his nineties. Authorities believe Sam re-entered the smoke-filled building in an attempt to rescue Lauren's dog, Buddy, before succumbing to smoke inhalation. The response allowed Lauren to secure a new apartment in Green Point, furnishing it with basic necessities, including a bed, a fridge, and a washing machine. Lauren has expressed her gratitude for the outpouring of support as she works to re-establish herself following the loss.
