The South Portland City Council voted 5-1 Tuesday to ask voters for approval of an $88 million bond to fund the construction of new police and fire stations.
This comes after the City Council rejected a $194 million bond to renovate the former Mahoney Middle School property into a comprehensive City Center complex, including a renovated theater, gym and community space.
According to WGME, City of South Portland officials have said that the plan would result in an estimated $267 annual property tax increase for someone with a home valued at $500,000.
“I’m gonna vote to send it to the voters, and if it moves forward, that’s great,” Councilor Richard Matthews said.
“And if they reject it, then the City Council has a lot of work to do, and we start at ground zero.”
