As data centers continue to dominate the public conversation, one congressman is proposing a "data center bill of rights" that would empower communities to reject proposals.
Local opposition to data centers, which provide the infrastructure needed to support AI computing power, has been exploding across the country.
According to Data Center Watch, a research firm tracking the issue, in the first quarter of 2026, 75 data center projects worth approximately $130 billion were blocked or delayed.
At least 15 states have considered banning data centers and some, such as New York, already have a moratorium in place.
Khanna, whose district includes Silicon Valley, told CNBC that the big tech companies building data centers were "losing the country."
