Georgia’s State Security Service (SSG) has launched an investigation under the article of sabotage over what it described as a foreign-directed disinformation campaign aimed at harming Georgia’s state interests. The investigation follows days of heated online discussions about Russian visitors to Georgia after an altercation at a hotel in Telavi involving a Georgian man and a group of Russian-speaking women. The incident generated competing narratives on social media and fuelled wider debate over the treatment of Russian tourists in the country. According to the SSG, the investigation concerns the alleged dissemination of ‘discrediting information’ against Georgia through fake social media accounts registered and managed abroad. The agency said the campaign was intended to damage Georgia’s economic interests by creating a false impression that the country had become an unsafe destination for Russian tourists.
