Hungarian journalist and activist László Róbert Mézes was detained in Tbilisi on Wednesday by officers from Georgia’s Migration Department.
Marika Arevadze, one of Mézes’s lawyers, announced on Thursday that Mézes had decided to leave Georgia voluntarily instead of appearing before court to defend his case.
László has made a decision and will leave Georgia on his own.
Mézes was detained under an article of the immigration law providing for the arrest and subsequent expulsion of foreign nationals.
According to the law, foreign nationals subject to expulsion are to be placed in a temporary accommodation centre.
