The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has raised the alarm over increasing cases of underweight cement on the market, alleging that unscrupulous traders tamper with and contaminate the product along the supply chain. This follows viral videos on social media showing 50kg cement bags weighing less than the stated weight. According to the standards bureau, which is currently litigating six cases involving both underweight and counterfeit cement, authorised cement manufacturers produce cement that meets the required quality and quantity standards. However, some bags are allegedly adulterated after leaving the factories. Addressing journalists in Kampala, UNBS Executive Director James Kasigwa also decried the bureau’s limited resources, saying the institution is currently operating at only about half of the required capacity.
