Jayapal, a Democrat who has represented the district since 2017, will face Republican Nirav Shethin the Nov. 3 general election. Sheth previously ran for Congress in Washington’s 10th District in 2024 before entering the race for the 7th District this year. The 7th Congressional District, which includes most of Seattle and surrounding communities, is considered one of the most Democratic districts in the country. Jayapal, who was first elected to Congress in 2016, is one of the most prominent Indian American lawmakers on Capitol Hill. If re-elected in November, Jayapal would continue serving Washington’s 7th District for another two-year term.
