It follows approval for the scheme by Wiltshire Council's Strategic Planning Committee in February this year. The government says it wants HGV rest stops every 14 miles on the motorway network, while full motorway service areas for general traffic are expected to be no more than 28 miles apart. The site, which is south of the M4 and east of the motorway junction, will be accessed from a new roundabout on the B4005 and will be accessible to both east- and westbound traffic. The scheme was originally envisaged as a truck stop, before the project evolved into a general motorway rest area. “Approving the application will address the recognised shortage of HGV parking in the area, every night HGV drivers are sleeping in laybys and industrial estates with no access to toilet and shower facilities," he said.
