Northeast Texas is getting a little dry, and more dry weather is in the forecast. The weather service predicts those conditions could lead to “rapid onset drought” from Deep East Texas to northern Louisiana. Gregg, Upshur, Harrison and Rusk counties have a drought index ranging between 500 and 600, while Smith and Marion counties have a drought index ranging between 600 and 700. No counties in Northeast Texas are experiencing the highest drought index, which ranges between 700 and 800. About 47% of the state is experiencing abnormally dry conditions; 12% is experiencing moderate drought; 6% is experiencing severe drought; and 1% is experiencing extreme drought.
