Cape Town’s ambitious MyCiTi Phase 2A rollout has reached another significant milestone after construction teams completed the installation of the massive bridge beams that will form part of the new Duinefontein Bridge. The complex engineering operation, carried out over five days, saw crews transport and lift pre-cast concrete beams measuring about 36 metres in length and weighing roughly 40 tonnes each into position at the busy Duinefontein Road and Govan Mbeki Road intersection. While motorists experienced temporary road closures between 1 and 5 August to accommodate the heavy lifting operation, the work represents one of the most visible stages of the bridge’s construction. ‘The successful installation of these bridge beams marks another important milestone in the construction of the new Duinefontein Bridge and the MyCiTi Phase 2A project. I would like to thank residents, commuters and motorists for their patience and cooperation during the temporary road closures.’
