Jeannette police are transitioning from the .45-caliber handguns officers currently carry to 9 mm duty weapons, according to Mayor Michelle Langdon and police Chief Derek Manley. They said the 9 mm guns will be lighter and have optics that will make it easier for officers to aim. A full department is 12 officers plus the chief. He also asked council to consider allowing officers to buy their current duty weapons, which he expects will offset the remaining $5,000 cost. Latrobe police made a similar move from .40-caliber duty weapons to 9 mm handguns in 2024 for the same reasons.
