NET Web DeskAizawl, August 6: An influential women’s organisation in Mizoram on Thursday condemned the growing practice of using women’s attire on social media to ridicule or demean individuals, describing it as disrespectful to women and calling for an immediate end to the trend. The statement by the state’s apex women’s body came days after the Youth Congress, the youth wing of the opposition Congress, displayed a poster of Chief Minister Lalduhoma wearing a traditional women’s skirt (Pawnfen) during a protest on August 4. The poster was used to criticise the Chief Minister over his remarks that allegedly downplayed the significance of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and the Mizoram Peace Accord, with the portrayal implying a lack of masculinity. Condemning such representations, the women’s organisation said using female attire as a symbol of ridicule is degrading to women and reinforces harmful gender stereotypes. It urged political groups and social media users to refrain from employing women’s clothing or identity as a means of mockery or political criticism.
