The long barrows dotting the Neolithic landscape of western Europe remain one of prehistory’s more stubborn riddles. Rather than excavate, the team relied on a ground-scanning approach that could map buried features while leaving the mounds intact. The broader cemetery complex also includes standing stones, passage tombs, and other barrows extending past 260 feet, all partially hidden beneath overgrowth and crossed by a service road running through the site. According to the researchers, the data pointed strongly toward clusters of stone within the mounds, consistent with chambers built from slabs. Erosion had already stripped away enough soil to reveal a granite standing stone sitting on the central axis of one barrow, directly above the zone where the densest resistivity readings were recorded.
