The Eyeless Cavefish Found Beneath a Chemical Weapons Facility Is Unlike Any Known Species

Indian Defence Review
A new species of eyeless cavefish has been identified beneath Redstone Arsenal in Alabama, where researchers studying the underground ecosystem discovered a fish unlike any previously known.
Named Demogorgonichthys arcanus, the species was found in Bobcat Cave, a site monitored for decades.
The researchers initially noticed that the fish looked different from the Southern Cavefish (Typhlichthys subterraneus), another blind cavefish species already known from the cave.
Genetic analysis showed that Demogorgonichthys arcanus did not fit within any known cavefish group.
The team is now continuing efforts to understand the population size and long-term needs of Demogorgonichthys arcanus.
