Christopher Simmonite, of Elm Terrace, Craghead, Stanley, was found to have thrown down a cigarette end and left it on the road at Stanley Bus Station, an offence under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
The incident occurred on March 28, in a public place to which the law applies.
The case was heard under the Single Justice Procedure, where Simmonite was not present, at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court on August 4.
Simmonite was fined £220 for the offence, ordered to pay a victim services surcharge of £88, and £204 in costs.
A collection order was made, and the total amount of £512 is to be paid by September 1.
